Daniel Ricciardo has taken his first steps towards toppling Mercedes in 2015 after beating Lewis Hamilton by seventh tenths in Top Gear's F1 driver challenge.
Ricciardo appeared on the popular British car programme on Sunday night to take part in its 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car'. Lewis Hamilton previously topped the F1 leaderboard with a 1:42.9, ahead of the man Ricciardo replaced at Red Bull, Mark Webber, and the Australian's former team-mate Sebastian Vettel.
In the interview segment before the lap was shown host Jeremy Clarkson opened questions up to the live audience, which led to one man shouting: "What does the back of Lewis' car look like?", a reference to the world champion's dominant season last year. Ricciardo jokingly gave a middle-finger gesture to the heckler but had the last laugh, setting a 1:42.1 in a Suzuki Liana to beat the benchmark Hamilton set two years ago.
After being told of his time, Ricciardo joked that he felt better than he did after claiming his maiden win in Canada last year. Ricciardo's time was a full second quicker than Webber and nearly two seconds better than Vettel, the man who he beat in 14 of the 19 races in 2014.
Before the episode aired, Ricciardo tweeted a picture taken before his lap, with the show's famous character Stig watching on.
