Iowa's Casino Success Leads to Consideration of More Casinos The few Iowa areas left without casino gambling want their share of the pie, and are asking for expansion of state licensed gaming venues from seventeen to twenty-two.

The state of Iowa is debating on whether to add to its seventeen existing state-licensed casinos by licensing five more riverboat gambling spots. Even remote areas of the state are clamoring for new casinos to be located in their area, hoping to benefit from new jobs and increased revenue.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission will meet this week to decide whether to permit casinos to operate in the towns of Fort Dodge, Ottumwa, and Franklin, as well as Tama and Lyon counties.

Like many of the existing casinos, most of the new proposals are based on drawing business across nearby state borders. The Lyon County casino, for instance, would be placed in a region with less than 12,000 residents, but almost walking distance from Sioux Falss, South Dakota, which holds over 200,000 people.

The commission says current Iowan gaming venues produce an economic impact of over $1 billion and employ over 10,000 people.

Still, opposition comes from the usual sources, religious groups parroting unfounded concerns over problem gambling increases and competitors facing lost business. In this case, the competition may include the Iowa lottery.

"We don't consider ourselves to be in direct competition with casinos. But it is something that can have an impact on our sales and proceeds," said Lottery Vice-President Mary Neubauer.
