Horrific Event Doesn't Make Online Gambling Evil A monstrous tale of a father who kept betting online on horse races while his daughter's dead body had been discovered doesn't mean gambling is at fault, says an analyst.
Opponents of regulating online gambling in the US often mention anecdotal stories that portray horrible events befalling problem gamblers, a reason online betting in the US is mostly restricted to horse racing. But an awful incident involving online horse racing doesn't mean it too should be banned, says a gaming expert.
Police and medical examiners arrived at a house in New South Wales to respond to a call that a seven-year-old girl had died, only to find her father found it difficult to interrupt his betting on horse racing on the Internet. Awoken by the girl's mother upon finding her body in her bed, the father checked race standings while awaiting officials.
Phone records show the man stopped playing while police were at his house, but that he immediately went back online after they left. They also show a period of some hours from the discovery of the girl's death and the call to emergency officials, during which the man was also active at his online gambling account.
OCA gaming analyst Sherman Bradley says this sad occurrence does not mean that online horse racing needs to be banned. He notes that using such highly unusual but emotional circumstances as a ploy to generalize against online casinos is an old tool of religious groups.
"The story is terrible, but it doesn't typify Internet gamblers or horse racing players, anymore than the stories repeated by religious fanatics in the US do. Saying a case like this means online gambling should be banned is like seeing a bad car accident and suggesting making cars illegal.
"It does raise the continuing question of the ways in which online horse race betting is supposedly morally superior to online casinos. US lawmakers have long granted horse racing exceptions, but this story shows that the minute part of the population with addictive tendencies can find outlets in many dysfunctional ways."
