The teacher becomes the student

Happy New Year!

As I begin a new year, I'm looking back on the end of my 2012.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

In November, I played the Asian Championship of Poker (ACOP) in Macau and was fortunate enough to do very well in the series. I won the first event and nearly final tabled the main event, finishing in 13th place. For me, that was a pretty big turnaround because my results in live events hadn't been too stellar in 2012.

Before November, I felt like I'd hit a plateau as a poker player. I needed a jolt to move to the next level, and thankfully I have a group of fellow players I can turn to for advice. When I returned to Taiwan from the U.S. after graduating college, I opened a poker school. It was an actual, physical school. We had a classroom with 30 computers and gave lessons day and night. There was far more demand for spots in the school than we had available, so we had to institute an application process and choose the students we thought were the most likely to succeed. I was really shocked, because a lot of people that applied to our school would be viewed as geniuses by society. Almost all of them were straight-A students with impeccable academic records.

One guy that came in held the Guinness World Record for multiplying numbers. He claimed to be able to multiply 13 digits by 13 digits. I wasn't fully aware what this meant, so I started him off with four figures by four figures--like, 8972 times 4956 and he'd literally answer me more quickly than I could type the numbers into a calculator. Eventually we worked up to 13 digits by 13 digits. Even adding in decimals, he could still do it faster than I could with the calculator!

So, as I was dealing with this poker "plateau," I read an interview with Matt Hawrilenko where he talked about his game theory-based approach to poker. I'm also friends with Terrence Chan and we chatted about some basic game theory concepts. I'm not really good at math and I didn't pay too much attention in my econ class back in college, so I knew what game theory was, but didn't understand it. I definitely still don't understand it completely, but I definitely have a better picture of it. Thankfully, the guys in my poker group are much better mathematicians than I am and they painstakingly laid out these really detailed concepts and explained them to me bit by bit.

Nowadays the games on PokerStars are getting tougher, especially at

the higher stakes. There are less recreational players and more experienced players. I didn't have to do too much to beat the recreational players. And when I was playing somebody who was really good, more often than not, it would turn into a leveling war--he's thinking this, so I'm going to think that. By taking this approach, a lot of times you're over-thinking your decisions. For one, you're never really sure what sort of emotional state your opponent is in, or if he's really capable of operating that many levels deep. A lot of times it's a guessing game, and you can get really frustrated when things aren't going your way. If you apply game theory, you don't have to worry because in every single situation, there is always an optimal play to be made. Discovering the optimal play in each situation is much like breaking down a puzzle backwards. For example, if I'm bluffing a specific hand on the river, how many combinations of real hands do I need to have on the previous street for me to be capable of betting this amount on the river? So instead of thinking, "Should I bet this river? What does he have?" you try to develop a distribution of how your hands will be played in this given situation. And once this distribution is laid out properly, according to the theory, you won't be able to be able to be exploited, no matter what your opponent does. Right now there isn't any software for me to verify this, so it's still an ongoing process of how to master it, but game theory has totally given me a different approach to how I look at poker.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

So far, my results have actually been pretty horrible! I'm definitely applying a lot of things wrong, but what I like about what's happening right now is that I feel like I'm thinking again. I'm thinking hard when I play and I'm thinking more even when I'm not playing. Throughout the whole year, I was kind of just playing on autopilot and if I didn't do well, I'd get frustrated. Nowadays, I feel like I'm becoming a student again and it really excites me. Poker feels more like an art and I'm starting to appreciate how truly complex this game really is.

It's been amazing to work with a group of such great minds and incredibly rewarding to teach them poker over the last few years. Now it's almost like my students are the ones teaching me.

Ready for the ACOP

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

I have long wished for a tournament series like the Asia Championship of Poker (ACOP) ever since I first came to Macau in 2007. It's the kind of big buy-in event that truly makes Macau the center of poker in Asia.

Years of waiting finally ended after the first ACOP took place last year. To my surprise I found myself at the final table of the very first ACOP Title Event - the Deepstack Championship. The event drew 192 entrants and the final table was a tough one as it featured Vladimir Geshkenbein and fellow Team PokerStars Pro Vivian Im.

I entered the final table with an average stack and didn't really feel much pressure. Whenever I'm at ease, that's when I end up with the best results. Anyhow, the short stacks started falling and I was relieved to see Geshkenbein bust as he posed a major threat to the title.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

When the play became 3-handed it was down to Vivian, myself, and a player named Iqbal Ahmed. I eliminated Vivian thanks to a preflop cooler and was heads up against Iqbal. It didn't take me long to recognize that my opponent was uncomfortable playing heads up with me. I've played a huge amount of heads up online and Iqbal clearly lacked a lot of experience. I chipped away at small-to-medium sized pots while frustrating him with lines that he was unfamiliar with. Finally, he had enough and bluff-shoved me on the turn with ace-high (AQ) when I had AA and he was drawing dead. It's very rare to be allin for a title (I covered him by just 3,000 chips) without a sweat!

Event 1 DeepStack Championship - Raymond Wu from Chinese Taipei - CROP.jpg

The rail was really great in their support and I had the first look at the ACOP Title Event trophy - a beautiful silver spade design. The win came out of nowhere and really lifted my confidence after a dry spell for most of 2012. With the confidence and momentum, I almost made the final table in the main event as well but busted 4 places short. But still a great two weeks of poker.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

For the past month or so I've been working a lot on my poker game in preparation for the upcoming ACOP which starts on October 18. I've been using game theory and many will find my style to be quite different. I am well prepared technically, mentally, and physically for the upcoming series and with the addition of the PLO Championship, I am determined to have another strong run.

Since Celina (Lin) beat me to become the first ever two-time Red Dragon Main Event winner in the Macau Poker Cup series, I'm looking to make my own mark in the ACOP. I want to be the first to get to two ACOP Title Events and stay on top with more than anyone else. All the championship events are great to win but let's just say my silver trophy is looking for his gold buddy (the main event trophy).

See you all at the ACOP and good luck!

Don't miss APPT Cebu

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

Over my seven year poker career, I've had the privilege of visiting some unique destinations. Cebu is one of my favorite places with a picturesque tropical area towards the south of the Philippines.

The macro of the entire Cebu area speaks nothing short of leisure, hospitality, and serenity. The oceans are a clear turquoise and the sand is shining pearl. The warmth of local Cebuano is a perfect match with the tranquilizing tropical weather. Here, you will not find sky scrapers or mega casinos. Instead, you will be surrounded by some of nature's greatest offerings!

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

The resort where players are staying at, the Shangri-la Mactan Resort & Spa, is simply one of the best resorts I've ever stayed in. The rooms are recently renovated and overlook the resort's private beach. Activities within the resort vary widely from arcade, gym, pool, mini golf, table tennis, boxing, golf, beach volleyball, and the famous Chi Spa. There are also a host of beach activities such as jet skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, and parasailing. All of this should come after an amazing breakfast buffet that features cuisines from all over the world.

fireworks_appt_cebu_party.jpg Player party in Cebu

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

One of my favorite activities inside the resort is fishing at the high sea! Well not exactly but what happens is a group of 8-10 people rent a boat from the beach club and set sail to a protected Marine Sanctuary miles from the resort. Here, the corals are almost surreal as the area is protected from any disruptions. You can even find local fishermen who sell seafood fresh off the boat. The price is very reasonable and the lobster and the sea urchin is usually within an hour of when it was caught. Then, as the ship sails back during sunset, you can pop some champagne and pinch yourself to remind you that you aren't dreaming!

Robin Lim, the Senior Events Manager, is known for organizing great celebrations and Cebu has got to be his best party on the tour. As you walk from your hotel to the private beach you'll be greeted by fire dancers and friendly staff. Inside the party, you will find a huge buffet featuring the best local dishes including the infamous Lechón - a whole roasted pig! There's usually a local band and whenever they inevitably sing Black Eyed Peas' "Tonight's gonna be a good night" it's always a foreshadowing of things to come. Just as the 'fun juice' kicks in from the open bar, the exclusive party for APPT players puts on a magnificent firework display. Honestly, it's one of those moments that cures all bad beats pains.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

You might have noticed that I haven't even talked about poker at all. APPT Cebu is one of the friendliest poker atmospheres in the world. But there is no doubt that Cebu is not just 'another' poker stop.

This is one place you absolutely don't want to miss!

The late-night grind

The biggest change in my life this year is unquestionably the birth of my daughter. She is eight months old now and after traveling to so many tournaments this fall, I'm happy to settle down and spend some time at home with her and my wife. I've been playing online mostly in the late evenings, after I've put her to bed. I'm really looking forward to the holiday season this year since it will be my daughter's first Christmas.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

I couldn't pass up a trip to the EPT San Remo, since it's my favorite stop on the entire tour. I traveled there with a great group of friends and had a fantastic time, despite busting out on Day 1. A few weeks later, my fellow Team Pro Dag Palovic invited me to come out to the Bratislava Poker Masters. A team event was on the tournament schedule and he asked me to join up with him. Naturally, our team was "Team PokerStars" and was made up of Dag, myself, and Richard Toth. We finished Day 1 in fifth position out of 13 teams remaining, but unfortunately things didn't go our way on Day 2. Our team finished in eighth place, but only the top three spots paid.

I also had the opportunity to play in the PokerStars Kosice Open. Kosice is the second-largest city in Slovakia and is home the beautiful Monte Carlo poker club. I only wish I had a more beautiful result. I played the main event and the high roller and finished just short of the money in both events. I fared much better at the Czech Poker Festival, held at the Card Casino Prague. I finished fifth in the pot-limit Omaha event and even managed to get in some multi-tabling. While playing in a six-max no-limit hold'em side event, I was simultaneously playing an online satellite into the main event. The Card Club Prague allows people to play online while at a live table and I successfully took advantage of that rule. Although I didn't cash in the six-max, I won the satellite and played the main event the next day.

Now that I am back home, it is nearly Christmas, and my only thoughts of poker are during those late nights online while my daughter sleeps peacefully in the next room.

Go big or go home

In 2012 I had a really successful run at the ACOP (Asia Championship of Poker). I won a PLO event and came very close to making the final table of the Main Event. Going into this year's ACOP, I was really hungry for another title and prepared myself well for the two-week grind--not only physically and mentally, but strategically. I had a new tournament strategy I wanted to apply at the poker table and although I followed through with my plan, the results were far from what I hoped for.

There are several different schools of thought on tournament poker and my ideal situation is to accumulate a lot of chips in the beginning. For me, there isn't any point in hanging around until near the bubble and only cashing for the minimum. I'm gunning for that Top 3 finish--go big or go home-- but I think I took that idea a bit too far this time.

At the ACOP, I did not survive three levels in any event I played. Prior to this tournament series, busting in three levels would have been a rare occurrence. It would have to happen on a big cooler or a really unlucky hand. However, this time I was playing really loose and playing so many hands resulted in me having to bluff a lot more. I wanted to be the table captain and was willing to do whatever I had to in order to get that position. If someone opened from late position, I would three-bet. And anytime someone would three-bet my late position raise, I would instantly four-bet. This strategy works really well if your opponent is intimidated or doesn't have a hand, but it didn't work on these guys. These players just wouldn't back down and I lost a lot of chips early.

Sometimes I would take slightly -EV situations just so I had a shot at the chip lead. I felt like the payoff would be better if I had a huge stack and could completely crush the table. For me, the most profitable situations in tournaments come from stealing my opponents' equity. For example, if I were to raise every single hand, people should be playing back at me with a set amount of frequency. When they aren't, I'm profiting. Eventually, opponents will catch on to my strategy, but until they do, I'm stealing a lot of pots, not to mention a lot of blinds and antes. However, now that I look back on it, I think I took that strategy too far and tried to force situations when I really didn't have to... especially in the Main Event.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

The ACOP Main Event has a $13k buy-in and a sick structure. When the two Day 1 fields were combined, about 85% of the players made it through to Day 2. I was not one of them. I think I was the fifth person overall to bust out. Most of the time, when you bust out of a big event, you find somebody to sympathize with you because they busted out as well. However, when I busted out, everyone else was still playing! Tournament staff and players alike were coming up to me, asking what happened and I didn't have a good answer for them. There was no cooler, there were no kings running into aces, I just bluffed off all my chips!

After busting from the Main Event, I talked to some of my poker buddies and realized that I probably wanted that second trophy too much. Some of these spots weren't as good as I thought they were and I readjusted my play for the last few events. I think I played a lot better, even though the results weren't there. I went deep in the final event, which my fellow Team Pro Celina Lin ended up winning.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

This was the first time I went into playing a big tournament series with absolutely no regard for my tournament life. In these fields, so many people are fearful of losing and when you're completely fearless about it, it does give you some power. But it doesn't give you everything. You know that saying, "In order to live, you have to be willing to die?" I went out there and died like a boss! But now I know I can't be so reckless in every tournament I play. I have to strike a balance and it's really difficult to do.

Playing so fast and "dying" because of it wasn't as bad as I thought, but maybe I wouldn't do it again in an event where 85% of the field survives to Day 2. It was pretty awful to bust that early. This was definitely a lesson learned for me. Why do I always seem to learn the important ones the hard way?

Playing a different angle

My PLO results since the middle of last year have been kind of frustrating. They've forced me to think about Omaha and poker in general in ways that I never did before.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

I thought back across my poker career. I started off playing limit hold'em. Then I transitioned to no-limit hold'em in 2007 before making the switch to Omaha in 2010. When you focus on playing one game for a while, you kind of forget how to play the other games a little. Players adapt and change all the time. If you go away for three months and then come back, the players play a little bit differently and the ranges are a little different. I'm sure I'd struggle with 6-max NLHE right now even though that was my main game for a number of years.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

ramond_wu_different_games.jpg

If I started playing a lot of 6-max NLHE again I'd have to back and re-evaluate how the game is played. When you do that, you have a new tool to use. You have all these different ideas from the other games that you've been playing that you can apply to the old game.

For example, in Omaha, there's emphasis on backdoor draws. They become quite significant. In hold'em we often forget about these draws, but they do add a few percentage points to your equity. When determining when to make a move, noticing a backdoor draw is going to increase your equity by just that much. Maybe it makes the difference in that instance, maybe it doesn't. But if you didn't realize it at all then you'd miss out on it.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

I was thinking about this after a recent break from PLO. Historically I've been well-known for being the guy who piles through a downswing, doesn't care, and never takes a break.

My attitude is the bigger the sample size, the quicker I'll get back to my equilibrium point.
This time exceeded my threshold a bit. It wasn't really the dollar amount that was frustrating, it was the way things were happening - losing a lot of flips and 60-40s.

Obviously I was playing badly as well. Downswings are a result of both bad variance and bad play.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

It got to the point where I felt like, "Why am I doing this?" PLO's a brutal game. I reminded myself "Hey, why don't you play something that's not so swingy." So I took a fresh look at hold'em. Just working on tightening up my hold'em game for 3 or 4 days got me out of my own mental black hole. It helped me look at Omaha in a more friendly light and convinced me to apply the same tightening strategy to my Omaha game and to get back on the horse. Plus I was able to think about concepts from one game that applied to the other, and vice versa.

It's good to take a step back and re-evaluate your game once in a while. Working on any game is going to help you as a player. It doesn't have to be your primary game. Even something as simple as rock-paper-scissors can spark a thought or an idea that gets you pointed in a winning direction.

Hitting the Macau Poker Cup

teampro-thumb.JPG

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

Coming off fresh from my cash at the EPT Grand Final in Madrid, I was feeling very confident going into the Macau Poker Cup series. I faced off against some of the best in the world in Madrid and ended up doing well and along the way picked up a lot of new cool plays!

The day finally came and along with my friends Itsau, Ryan, and Marcus, four of us journeyed 90 minutes from Taipei to Macau. We were greeted with familiarity at the fabulous hotel Grand Lisboa as this is the venue for the event and settled ourselves down with a traditional dim sum dinner to warm ourselves up. Macau, for those of you that are not familiar, is the gaming capital of the East. It's filled with glitz and glamour, neon lights, opulent bars, and 24 hours pawn shops! It is truly a city that NEVER sleeps.

Starting off would be event number one which I entered day two with the chip lead with just 21 players remaining. Unfortunately for me I lost two very crucial flips that got me crippled and exited early at 15th place. Needless to say I was very disappointed but I felt great about my result as I basically pummeled my way through day one like a restless truck driven by a bank robber. I was stealing and commanding the tables like no other. The tactics I picked up at the EPT Grand Final were now in full throttle!

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

The next couple of days featured a numbered event each day and thankfully each one of us cashed in something, albeit nothing significant. If the event took place at night we would wake up and spend the entire day soaking ourselves up in the Grand Waldo Spa, which is located near the Venetian Macau, and it offers a full range of water spa, sauna, steam room, Chinese/thai massage, facials, cheap food, and free internet! The place is reasonably priced and extremely popular amongst Macau regulars for relaxing before or after an event. I'd like to recommend depositing $5,000 HKD at the front desk which gives you an instant 20% discount for you and all your friends. Count me in!

ray at mpc.jpg

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

Besides the relaxing Grand Waldo Spa, most of our nights would be spent drinking away at one of Macau's fantastic clubs. I know many players favor the Lion's Bar at the MGM Grand which features a live band; however, I personally prefer a much quieter outing located at the 38th floor of the hotel Altira. The place is called Crystal Lounge and on top of being spacious, classy, and peaceful, it offers the best skyline view of Macau, indoors or outdoors, your pick! Or you could head over to StarWorld's Whisky bar which also features a live band! I know many players that would go to one of these joints until 2am and head out to a serious night club like D2 and party until the morning. For your information partying doesn't start in Macau until earliest 2am!

The day before the main event a couple of friends gathered in my room pondering what activity we should indulge in that night. Opinions flew back and forth and an hour later we were playing roulette on one's iPhone for money, standard I guess for poker players, ha! Eventually the roulette got boring so we played some baccarat. Then blackjack. Then casino war. The time literally flew and 3 hours later everyone was pretty much even. Finally, I decided it was time for some good old rock paper scissor. It was four way and if one of us knocks out all three in the first round then everyone else would lose double. Man, let me tell ya, this may sound totally silly to you, but there was some SICK leveling going on that night. One of my friends, Victor, would call out what he was going to throw and tell others what to do, and he would switch back and forth between telling the truth and bluffing. It was incredibly intense and fun, but ridiculous to say the least. The game totally reminded me of how similar a game it is to poker, especially live poker, where your ultimate goal is to correctly adjust to your opponent's tendencies. The night ended up poorly for me as I am a rock paper scissor fish and ended up losing $7,000 HKD but it surely was a good warm up for the main event the next day!

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

Day 1 of the main event saw me doubling up in the first level with AA and trying to secure the spot of table captain. Unfortunately, a player, hailing from Malaysia, would be my menace for the day and did everything in his power to stop me from bullying everyone. At the end of the day I really felt like I was pretty much just playing heads up with him as no one else wanted a piece of anything. Him and I would just go at it almost every hand and although I bested him in some crucial spots (including shoving bottom pair for value and getting called by Ace high), he ended the day with almost twice as much as I did. I, on the other hand, had a roller coaster day going from nothing to everything, back to nothing, then something again. Day 2 was however short for me when a player on the button raised and I reraised all in with K5o thinking his range is really wide and would fold a lot. Bad timing is the right word as his KK would completely crush me and send me out early.

Overall a very satisfying trip as almost all Macau trips are. Played a lot of tournaments, gained experienced, played degenerate games with friends in the room, ate like there was no tomorrow, drank like there was no tomorrow, oh and lived like there was no tomorrow! Remember to hit me up in Macau next time! Good Luck!

Nutritional therapy

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

I was a heavy junk food eater in high school and college. It was pretty much all I wanted to eat, so it's no surprise that I started to have digestive problems. Doctors kept telling me, "You need to have a balanced diet. You need to have more vegetables and fruits in your diet." That was like telling me to grow a second head. I hated vegetables. I was the kid who picked out all the greens from his food.

Then I saw some video clips about processed food from a movie called Food, Inc. I started thinking about just how bad processed foods are for your body. Combined with my doctors' advice, I decided it was time to give a vegan diet a try.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

That's a pretty hardcore shift though, so I didn't just change overnight. I got pointers from friends and people on Facebook who are active about their health and their diet. One of the things many of them told me was to incorporate it step by step. Try to eat vegetarian for the first half of the day, they said, but give yourself an out for dinner. Avoid heavy meat-based meals like steakhouses and barbecue joints.

raymond_wu_blog.jpg

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

So I took the plunge. At first it was a real struggle. I hated vegetables. I hated the taste, the texture. I hated everything about them. When I would eat a handful of spinach, instead of focusing on the taste I focused on the fact that it was doing my body some good. And as I started to eat fewer processed foods and more vegetables and fruits I began to like them. I realized they aren't too bad at all. Now I eat spinach all the time and enjoy it.

The hardest part of this new diet for me is accessibility. I don't really cook at home. I don't enjoy it. Having to find good food in restaurants is difficult in Taipei (and when I'm in Macau, forget about it). There are some restaurants that do completely vegan or organic, and luckily I have two close by. I try to eat at them when I can.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

One of the biggest differences since I made the change is that I don't feel as heavy as I used to. Especially during lunch, I used to often get a big food coma. With my new diet that's gotten a lot better. Eating a vegan diet usually translates to a lighter meal and allows me to avoid the food coma. Now I have more mind clarity in the afternoon, which is incredibly useful when I play poker. And those digestive problems I was having? They've gone away.

I was a pretty heavy exercise guy before this. I would train MMA, stand-up fighting and ground fighting. That type of training calls for a lot of protein in my diet, especially post-workout. That's been a little bit of a problem for me. After working out a big steak would be considered good for muscle building. But my muay thai coach is an inspiration in that regard. Obviously he trains and needs strong muscles, but he's on a completely vegan diet. It's definitely possible.

Poker players often travel and eat whatever's near the table. We neglect our diet and don't think about the long-term impact that has on our health. If you eat junk for 20 or 30 or 40 years, the bad stuff is going to show up and by then it'll be too late. How much money you've made playing poker won't mean anything if you don't have your health.

How great players handle the highest pressure

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

In early June I made my first foray into the poker broadcast booth by providing Mandarin-language commentary of the GuangDong Ltd Asia Millions for PokerStars TV. I was partnered with Andrew Mao, another guy from China, and Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin.

I had done some commentary in Taiwan previously but it wasn't live. The first time you broadcast live on-air it's quite challenging. We provided commentary for the entire tournament, which turned out to be more than 20 hours of air time. It's very tiring, talking that much! Your mouth gets dry, you need a lot of water and a lot of caffeine. But being able to see that kind of tournament firsthand and broadcast my ideas to the entire Chinese-speaking population was a great experience.

It was really fun and really exhilarating for us to see so much money going into the middle. It absolutely made me want to play but the buy-in was $130,000 and pretty much everybody came in for three bullets. It was basically a $400,000 tournament. You can buy an apartment for that much money!

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

raymond_wu_winner_blog.jpg Raymond Wu (with enough chips to buy an apartment)

The event featured some of the world's best players, like ElkY, Isaac Haxton and Sorel Mizzi among others. Watching them and providing commentary on their play, I realized that they make mistakes just like anybody else. And then they move on.

Playing that kind of tournament and to be able to let things go and not care about a mistake afterwards, made me realize, "Oh, everybody is human after all. Nobody's perfect. These people do make mistakes but it's about how you recover from them that separates the great players."

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

That can be a problem for me. Sometimes in the past, when I was not running too well, I'd put a lot of pressure on myself, maybe be a little bit too hard on myself if I made a mistake. That caused a lot of mental pressure going into every game. Every single time I made one bad decision it would feel like the end of the world.

With these guys showing me how they handle bad beats and bad plays, and especially bad decisions, I took a step back and reminded myself, "Nobody's perfect." We all make mistakes. These guys were making decisions, on the fly, for millions of dollars. They were sometimes coming out right and sometimes they were coming out wrong. When they were wrong, and clearly wrong, it didn't seem to affect their play afterwards.

appt_macau_raymond_wu_mike.JPG

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

It's a tough life for Raymond...

I thought guys like ElkY and Isaac Haxton, given their results would play completely perfectly, but that's impossible. No one plays perfectly. Seeing them make even small mistakes gave me more confidence in myself.

Providing the commentary and watching these great players do their thing really gave me the itch to play. I wanted to be out there with them, but I can't commit that much money to one tournament. I might be able to put in one buy-in, but three $130,000 buy-ins is a little too rich for my blood. I think the commentary booth is the closest I'll get to that kind of tournament.

Zoom poker strategy and tips

teampro-thumb.JPG

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

With the rising popularity of the fun, fast-paced Zoom poker on PokerStars, players are now getting a handle on the ring format game where their opponents change every hand and it is time not just to adapt, but thrive. To help other players come out ahead, we approached Team PokerStars Pro Raymond Wu for his top tips on how to maximize your Zoom experience.

1. Don't get in over your head: Zoom is fast and the action is awesome; however, you don't want to overwhelm yourself by popping up too many tables. This will cause you to play too robotically which will cause your results to suffer.

2. Don't over-fold your blinds: It can be very enticing to fold your marginal hands when in the blinds in favour of seeing the next hand; however, doing this will cause you to be very vulnerable to steals which will lead to you bleeding money slowly but surely.

3. Don't over-defend your blinds: Contrary to the above, you also don't want to over defend your blinds versus steals. This is a key ingredient to fancy play syndrome and your goal is to achieve a balance regarding blind defence.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

4. Take notes on opponents: This can be a bit difficult as the games are super fast paced. I think the most effective way to take notes is to do it after the session when it's all over and done.

5. Do go back and see what happened last hand: If there was a big pot being played out and you folded and got moved, you can either hold CTRL when folding to watch the hand play out or you can click on "previous hand" on the left of the table to see what happened. Don't overlook this simple task as it can gain you valuable information down the road.

6. Don't get personal: If someone is messing with you in position, don't worry. The next hand it will be another person since you will move. Therefore, when faced with a decision you don't really have to factor meta-game or game dynamics in there. Zoom poker is more about how to deal with THIS specific hand on the spot.

Keep these simple and useful tips in mind the next tim

Second place forever

At this point, it's fair to say the Sunday Warm-Up is my favorite tournament on PokerStars. I made the money three times in July including a deep run where I made the final three tables. Unfortunately that time, I was in a situation where I was flipping for the chip lead and lost. It seemed like I couldn't win in that spot until August 11th, when everything finally went right and I finished in second place for over $76,000.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

The key hand of this tournament for me happened on the final table bubble. I had the chip leader at my table and he was playing very aggressively, opening almost every pot to put pressure on the shorter stacks. One time that he opened, I found ace-ten and shoved, but that time he had a real hand and snap-called with pocket queens. Fortunately I flopped an ace and I went to the final table with a very healthy stack.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

When five players were left, we started talking about a deal, but couldn't get everyone to agree. It was kind of a funny situation because every single time, the player who rejected the deal ended up being the next to bust out. I didn't discount the possibility of a deal, but when I got heads-up, it didn't make sense to chop it anymore. I had some history with PokerSavage1 and knew he was a tough, experienced regular. He also had a four to one chip advantage, so a chip chop would have awarded me $79k with $10k still in play. My choice was either to lock up slightly more than second place money or give myself the chance to win the whole thing. I opted for the latter, but was unable to battle back one more time.

Still, $76k is a huge sum and it represents my second-best online MTT score. Although it's a great accomplishment, it seems like I'm always stuck in second place! My biggest online score came when I finished second in a WCOOP 2nd chance High Roller event for $92k and my biggest live score was at the 2010 EPT Vienna, where I was the runner-up.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

Since I made such a nice score, I decided to take a vacation with my family. We stayed in the Czech Republic and went to a nearby lake to relax. And for me, relaxing means fishing. Fishing really helps me stay calm and turn my mind off. I can let go and just enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. I don't live too far from a river and I try to get out there to fish every couple of weeks.

Now it's time for WCOOP. In the past, I've mainly stuck to hold'em and Omaha events, but this year I'm going to put some mixed events on my schedule, like deuce-to-seven and five-card draw. I've put in the time learning these games and I'm ready to give them a shot in a bigger buy-in event, and the WCOOP is the perfect place to do it. The prize pools are simply too juicy to pass up.

Schooling myself

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

I went to high school in the United States and was a pretty good student through the end of ninth grade. However, once I discovered partying and girls during sophomore year, my grades plummeted significantly. I was so bored I basically slept through my classes and barely passed at the end of the term. In college I was even worse. I didn't even go to class because we weren't penalized for not showing up. The worst thing you could do was fail and pretty soon I was failing out of school. I found poker while I was in college and was soon convinced that I didn't need to continue with my studies to reach my goals. I was already making the kind of money not a lot of people can make. I didn't need art history. I didn't need math. I didn't need to understand how objects fall or how fast. None of it mattered to me anymore.

When I told my father I didn't want to go back to school, it spurned a massive fight. I pled my case that school no longer was useful for what I wanted to do in life and he obviously did not concur. In the end, I agreed to finish college because I only had a year left. After that, I was free to do whatever I wanted.

"If I fall asleep like this they'll think I'm studying."

I graduated college and played poker professionally for the next five years. Everything went smoothly and I had a lot of success. But as everyone knows, the game is getting tougher all the time. It's no longer valid to justify a line by saying "Well, I did that because I felt he was bluffing." Or, "I felt like he had a hand." Playing by feel isn't good enough anymore. It's enough to get you to a certain point, but when you're playing expert on expert, you really need to know the true answer to the hand or at least as close as possible.

How do you figure that out? Well, you need to do some math.

For the last couple of years, the biggest winners online are guys like Ben "Sauce123" Sulsky and Ike Haxton. These guys have come out and said that math and game theory are the way to go when it comes to the future of poker. I thought, you know what? These guys are awesome. I'm going to listen to them. I'm going to pick up The Mathematics of Poker. I'm going to read it, and I'm going to become the Sauce of Asia. So I bought the book. And I read maybe ten pages before I was completely lost.

"Screw this," I thought. "I'm not reading any of this."

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

In that moment, I realized something. I wished I had paid attention back in those high school math classes I once believed to be so useless. As a poker player, the biggest part of my bottom line in the future will come from my technical game. And that aspect of my game needs to improve as the player pool gets better. In order to gain that edge, I came to terms with the fact that I needed to study math all over again. If you're anything like me and pretty much shut down during high school Calculus, you can imagine my pain.

Instead of looking for a tutor or enrolling in a local university, I found an incredible resource called Coursera. It's a website that offers college and post-grad level online classes offered by some of the most prestigious universities in the world. I spent a lot of time exploring the course offerings and found so many I wanted to take. Why couldn't I have been this eager to learn when I was actually in school? Back then I didn't think economics was useful, or game theory, or math. I didn't think anything was relevant except studying poker. Now I understand that all of this stuff matters.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

raymond_wu_school_2.jpg Study your game theory or Vanessa Rousso will hunt you down

This semester, I'm taking two business courses offered by the Wharton School, as well as my old nemesis, calculus. Instead of going to class like a zombie, I'm really focused, going through the lectures video by video and studying the reading materials like I was going to take the final exam tomorrow. Now that I understand how I will apply the material I'm learning in the real world, I'm so much more refreshed and motivated to actually retain this information. My parents couldn't believe it when I told them I was taking online classes. They were even more shocked when I revealed that I was seriously thinking about getting my MBA if I ever decided to take a break from poker.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

Unless you improve upon your weaknesses, you'll never experience true growth. It's a cliché, but when it comes to poker, only the strong survive and I don't want to be left behind. That's why I'm putting in the hard work now. The things I'm learning now will not only elevate my poker game to a new level, but pay even bigger dividends in the future.

Starting them young

Hello from the Czech Republic! It's a cold winter here, which began back in December when I celebrated Christmas six times! I got together with my family, my wife's family, my ex-wife's family, and some friends, too, so we were ringing in the holidays over and over again. I have two children -- a ten-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter -- and they had a lot of fun around Christmas-time as well.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

I play poker for full-time, but I also try to spend a lot of time with my family. Even though I play about five or six hours a day, I usually spend as much time as possible with them, and I am enjoying that obviously. For example, my son has been doing well in school lately, and so tomorrow we're going to go to a soccer match as a reward, so we'll be having a fun family day.

Speaking of my children, I've been teaching my daughter to play poker. She's not walking yet, but she's watching me play online and learning. She likes to see the pictures of the cards and she knows when they match and they don't match. It's very funny to watch her watching me, and really, she's on her way to being a great player already!

My son also likes poker, and in fact he's already playing on his own (for play money, obviously). He watches me play, too, and has asked me for advice regarding the game. So he's learning a lot as well.

2010 WSOP_Main Event_Day 1B_Joe Giron_JGP7131.jpg

They are getting a big head start on me when it comes to learning poker. I was about 28 or so when I first learned the game -- about 10 years ago. Watching my kids and how much they are able to learn so quickly, I'm realizing that as an older person it is harder to learn and improve at poker.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

The game has gotten a lot tougher, too, with a lot of young players who are really smart and who study the game constantly, reading blogs and watching videos and absorbing everything. Nevertheless, I try to do what I can to improve myself, too, even if it has become tougher to do so as I am getting older. I have a few things on my side, too, like experience and discipline, which can help me counter that edge my younger opponents might enjoy.

So I keep at it. Heck, before long I might be learning some new things from my son and daughter, too!

Fish & trips

2011 was a terrible year for me poker-wise. It seemed I was seeing the ugly side of variance every time I sat down to play. However, in 2012 I started finally turning it around. Experiencing such highs and lows in the game made me realize I had to adapt more of a long-term thought process to my approach. I read up on a lot of strategy articles and tried not to let a day go by when I didn't learn something new or do something to improve my game. So far this year, I've been playing really well and I feel like I'm experiencing a new level of confidence. I'm making a few final tables each week and have been very happy with my results.

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

One thing that really helped when I was re-evaluating my game was adjusting my computer setup. I expanded to three flat-screen monitors, which enables me to play up to 20 tables very comfortably with no overlap between them.

hruby_setup.JPG A sickest setup contender?

www.inulpoker.com | agen poker terpercaya | poker terpercaya | poker dan domino online indonesia terpercaya | poker dan domino terbaik |

I've mostly been sticking to MTTs and MTT Sit & Go's, but I've also found success with the step satellites. I saved myself a lot of money by winning an EPT Berlin package (including buy-in, hotel, and cash for travel expenses) worth €8,000 through only a €27 investment in the steps.

In between tournaments and playing online, I've also squeezed in a couple of holidays. I have a young son and a 15-month old daughter and we recently took a trip to the mountains to go skiing. The resort was ideal for families with kids and we rented a cottage that was situated close to the children's ski zone. The kids really enjoyed it. It was also a nice surprise to discover there were four other families staying at the lodge that played poker. After we got the children to sleep each night, we stayed up and either played a home game or all played online on our laptops. I made a little money in the home games and had a wonderful, relaxing time.

Spring has finally arrived in the Czech Republic and these days I'm spending a lot of time working outside in my garden. It's my daughter's first spring and I've been building her a sandbox and a playhouse. I'm also planning out my schedule for the WSOP. A good friend of mine won a package and we're going to travel to Las Vegas together. I think I'll be there for about three weeks total. But first, I'm looking forward to a different kind of fishing trip. This one is an annual excursion to Spain with a group of my closest friends. Here's a look at what I caught last time.

WCOOP 2010: I'm pumped for WCOOP

jason_mercier_25k.jpgby Jason Mercier

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

I just recently glanced over the PokerStars WCOOP schedule and it got me pretty excited. With just a few weeks before WCOOP starts, I will need to figure out which events I will be playing. I will be trying to balance playing WCOOPs along with playing live, while possibly being in Europe for the entire duration of WCOOP. This will make it more difficult with the time difference, but I'm up for the challenge.

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

I plan on playing all the biggest buy-in WCOOPs, possible, even trying my hand at the $25k heads-up for the first time. I'm very excited for the last few days of events when there is a $2k PLO 6 max, $2k horse, $10k 8 game and the $5k Championship event!

Not only have I never won a WCOOP event, I have never even final tabled one. I think that this is going to be my year. I'm feeling and hoping for a strong showing in this year's WCOOP.

The structures are so great and the variety of tournaments is so amazing, it's such an awesome experience just playing in the WCOOP on Pokerstars.

But this year... I WANT TO WIN!

Flying for WCOOP, waiting on a baby

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

I'm writing from Florida where I've been enjoying some down time since returning from EPT Barcelona, spending time with family and enjoying watching my Miami Dolphins get off to a good start this season. However, I'm just about to enter another very busy period of travel starting with a trip up to Toronto to play the last few days of the WCOOP this weekend.

jason_mercier_garry_gates.JPG Garry Gates and me

Besides the Main Event, I'm really looking forward to the $10,300 8-game (Event #65) on Sunday, which I'm very excited about because I won that event last year. It's pretty much my favorite online tournament of the year -- an elite event that usually only gets about 100 people. That's my favorite form of poker when I play online (8-game cash), so I've been looking forward to it ever since this year's WCOOP schedule was announced.

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

I was actually in Toronto not long ago and played some earlier WCOOP events and took third in one of the bigger ones, Event #24 ($700 NLHE). That one had close to 3,500 entrants and I made it to a four-way chop and got almost $230K for finishing third. So it was a very successful weekend -- I literally flew up there for a couple of days just to play.

I returned to Florida quickly, though, because I'm currently waiting for my niece to be born. She was due a few days ago, but she's still not here! I was really hoping that she was going to be here before I left again, but once more I'll just be gone for a quick trip and will come right back and hopefully be there when she does arrive.

I have three older siblings who are all married and all have a child or a child on the way, so there's a lot going on when I visit and the days are full and lots of fun. It's always great to spend time with our growing family and it's an exciting time with our new family member due any day.

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

mercier_nephew.JPG With my nephew

It'll be a tight window again, though, when I return, as starting in early October I'll be heading to Europe for what will be a month-long trip of tournaments and other engagements. First up will be EPT London where I'll be jumping right into the £50K Super High Roller event. I'm excited about that one as it's the first time they're running a Super High Roller there.

I've had a lot of success in London over the past five years, so ev

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

ery time a big event comes up there, I'm amped for it. In fact, five years ago they had their first ever High Roller event in London, and I happened to win that one, so I'm hoping something similar happens with this first Super High Roller event.

In addition I'll be playing the £5k Main Event and the £10k High Roller, and there may be some big open-face Chinese games running there, too, with some of the Macau guys. Some of my close friends will be coming with me as well which makes me look forward to the trip even more, especially the chance that they'll get to see me play and possibly win something while they are there.

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

After EPT London, I'm heading to WSOP Europe in Paris. This will be my sixth year in a row to play the WSOPE. While I've had a lot of success there I've never won a WSOPE bracelet, so that's a big goal for me to try to win one this time. There's a decent schedule with seven bracelet events, including a High Roller there as well.

Then it'll be heading to Barcelona to shoot some PokerStars commercials, then over to the Isle of Man for some more PokerStars activities. All in all a pretty jam-packed month coming up which should be a lot of fun, but I'm already looking forward to getting back to Florida afterwards to spend more time with family... especially my new niece!

Finding Fantasyland

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

Today, I'm playing in Day 2 of the PCA $100,000 Super High Roller, and if I survive until tomorrow it's going to put a serious dent in my plans to play the PCA's first Open-Face Chinese Poker tournament.

After spending over two months traveling around Europe for tournaments, I was finally able to go home to Florida. I spent about seven weeks there before making a last-minute decision to fly out to Prague for two weeks to play the WPT and EPT events. I didn't get the results I was hoping for, but taking the trip ended up being a good decision. I made a deep run in the WPT and got 12th place, and then got 7th in the €10,000 High Roller event at the EPT.

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

I also got in plenty of hours playing Open-Face Chinese while I was in Prague. A ton of Russian guys were playing and games went off pretty often. I mostly played for €100 a point and ended up doing fairly well. Although I've talked a lot about Open-Face Chinese lately, this time we were playing a bit of a different variation of the game that not everyone knows about yet. This extra component to the game is called "Fantasyland." It basically means that if you get queens or better in your top hand, on the next deal you get to look at all 13 of your cards face-down and set it like a regular Chinese hand while the rest of your opponents continue playing face-up. Getting to Fantasyland is a pretty rare feat because it's extremely difficult to make that big a three-card hand in Open-Face. It might be common in regular Chinese, but the hand values are a lot different in Open-Face. Fantasyland is a pretty cool addition to the game because a lot of people gamble hard to make it there and end up fouling their hand along the way. It adds more variance and excitement and puts another gambling element in play.

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

For now, I'm turning my focus to the the $100,000 event today, but rest assured, that Open-Face tourney isn't going to be far from my mind.

Poker experiences

There are so many different formats for tournament poker. I played in two unique tournament formats recently, one I didn't much like and one that I really enjoyed.

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

The first, the one I didn't like, was the Premier League VI event in London. I had been invited to the Premier League in the past but I had never gone. This was the first time that I actually played.

In this format, there are two groups of eight players. Each group plays four heats that are all basically separate satellites to accumulate points. At the end of the four heats, the top three players on points from each group advance to the final. The 4th and 5th place players in each group play a best-of-three heads-up match for the last two spots in the final. Starting stacks at the final table are dictated by point totals from the preliminary heats.

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

When I play normal multi-table tournaments, I pretty much just focus on accumulating chips. In the Premier League, focusing solely on accumulating chips isn't necessarily the best strategy. You're putting yourself at risk of going broke and not earning any points. It's a very particular strategy that creates some odd spots. For example, in the last heat, if you were high on the leaderboard in points all you had to do was not bust out first and you'd advance to the final.

I really enjoyed the thought process that the Premier League provoked. I felt like it was very good for my poker mind, puzzling through the "right way" to play the tournament. I called Vanessa Selbst a couple of times to talk about strategy. I spoke with Sam Trickett, Tobias Reinkemeier and Marvin Rettenmaier on set. We spent a lot of time talking about how we should be playing the event better

The actual process of playing, however, didn't end up being fun - especially since it didn't really go well for me. I finished in 7th place in my Group and thus didn't advance to the final. For me, playing optimally in this event forced me to play against my normal style. The format causes you to constantly be thinking of ICM and how you're supposed to move up in the points and survive, rather than thinking about how to build a big stack.

I was grateful for the invitation and the opportunity to play in the event, and I did enjoy the strategy aspects of it. I felt like I grew as a poker player playing this event. I would more than likely go back and play it again for the challenge.

On the other hand, I very much am a fan of the recent trend toward re-entry events in big buy-in poker tournaments. I'm not sure if I like unlimited re-entry events, but I do like the thought of a second bullet. You can play on Day 1A and then if you bust you can play on Day 1B.

There are only so many live events. It's not like online poker where there are unlimited tournaments at all times that you can play. Getting a second chance at a big live event is always a nice thing. It helps to smooth out variance a little.

I'm really looking forward to the next few months of play as I'll be grinding for eleven weeks straight from the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo through the World Series.

Negreanu just misses WSOPE title, breaks money record

ps_news_thn.jpgUnder almost any different set of circumstances, Daniel Negreanu would've been down the street at the Cafe de Paris where the EPT London revelers were lubricating their minds and joints at the European Poker Tour welcome party. On any other night, Negreanu would've been on the mic, glad-handing in the crowd, and getting ready to play in the EPT Main Event.

Instead, he was a few blacks away from the Piccadilly Circus party and playing for the World Series of Poker Europe bracelet.

By the time the party was winding down, fellow Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier shuffled in, having finished fourth for £267,267. The crowd gave him the proper respect at his nearly capturing another major title. With Mercier gone, the PokerStars loyalists and Negreanu fans began to get excited.

As it happened, Negreanu had started the WSOPE final table as the shortest stack. Over more than a dozen grueling hours had worked himself back up to the lead, and eventually heads up against CardPlayer magazine chief Barry Shulman.

When most of the EPT partiers were heading to bed, Schulman had taken a nearly 5-1 chip lead and the tournament looked to be at its end for Kid Poker. Instead,he came back, took over the chip lead, and had his hands on the bracelet.

One big hand made all the difference. With the money in on the flop, Negreanu was behind with top-pair of jacks and a queen kicker, up against Schulman's overpair of aces. When Kid Poker spiked a jack on the turn, it looked as if we's see another bracelet on Negreanu's wrist. The ace on the river was about as crushing a blow as Negreanu could expect to handle.

He never recovered. A few minutes later, the told the world via Twitter the hand "will make you hate poker."

By sun-up this morning, Negreanu watched the bracelet handed to Schulman. Gracious in defeat, Negreanu took his second place spot and £495,589 in prize money.

Though there is no discounting the disappointment Negreanu is experiencing this morning, he can take some heart that he is now poker's all-time tournament money winner. It's not a bracelet, but it's something.

Congratulations to both Negreanu and Mercier for outstanding performances in the WSOPE.

Targetting the Belgian Poker Challenge

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

I've been playing a lot online lately, but my attention is turning back toward the live game because the Belgian Poker Challenge is here and I'm excited!

I'm attending the entire festival which is taking place 24 November - 1 December here in Namur, Belgium. It's an annual event and always brings out a lot of interest among Belgian players. This year the BPC Namur Main Event is a €1,500 tournament sponsored by PokerStars with the winner being hailed as the Belgian poker champion.

I played a number of satellites on PokerStars for the Main Event and in fact won three times, which is great because it is a re-entry event so I've got three buy-ins to use if I happen to bust out. Last year I finished seventh in the event after having a horrible first bullet, then buying back in and making that deep run.

In addition to the cash prizes and the chance to be called the Belgian poker champion, the BPC events -- including the side events -- also have points awarded toward a ranking system of Belgian players, so it's nice to get those points and move up the rankings, especially being a Team PokerStars Pro from Belgium!

I really like these ranking systems -- including ones like the Global Poker Index -- which give a good idea of how players are doing not just in one tournament, but overall.

I think those systems help make poker seem like more of a sport and less like simply gambling, and thus highlight the skill of the game a little more. They show how being good at poker really has to do more with the long term - including trying to play your A-game as much as possible in many events as well as being able to practice smart bankroll management - than with winning or doing well in a single event.

It's very cool, too, to see yourself going up and down in the rankings - more so up than down, of course! - as well as how others are doing. The rankings give fans and those who follow the game a clue about who is really doing well, too.

Speaking of those Belgian rankings, I've actually been getting a lot of scores in Belgium lately. I think I've cashed in two out of three events I've played here over the past year. And back in April, Matthias also won the BPC Middelkerke Main Event for €53,459, so we've both been making our mark here of late.

In addition to providing some extra motivation to perform well, there are also prizes being awarded to those who top the Belgian rankings, which makes for even more incentive. I think they also help show that even though poker is about the money, it's also about the competition and wanting to do well and make a name for yourself.

All of which is to say, the Belgian Poker Challenge offers lots of great challenges to poker players. Bring them on!

Just bad luck

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

If you look at my Hendon Mob entry for last year, you probably think I had a good year. It shows that I had $523,587 in tournament cashes for the year and three WSOP final tables. But I can honestly say that 2012 was pretty brutal for me. It was my first losing year as a professional poker player.

It started when I went to LA in February, after a very good January. I made one final table at the PCA and did very, very well in the cash games at the Aussie Millions. That success came on top of winning the $100k high roller event at the Bellagio in December. Everything was going great.

But after I got to LA in February I just couldn't win. At one point, playing mostly 600-1200 mixed games, I lost five straight cash game sessions for a ton of money each time. By the time I left LA I had lost close to half a million dollars.

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

When you feel like you can't win a hand and lose so much in such a short period of time, you start to question whether or not you even know what you're doing at the table. That can be very dangerous, to both your bottom line and your confidence. You really have to grit your teeth and stick to your game.

It took me a while to get some confidence back. But I kept plugging away at it and got some momentum going towards the end of the year. I think I'm going to carry that forward throughout a very busy 2013.

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

My goal for the year is to make a million dollars. Not to have a million dollars in Hendon Mob entries; to have a million more dollars at the end of the year than I had at the beginning.

To get there, I have plans to travel a lot and to play every big tournament and every big cash game that I can. I pretty much am going from stop to stop with a few breaks at home in Florida. I'll be playing almost every event until the World Series and then I'll be in Vegas for two months.

People ask me, "How do you have the focus to play so many events?"

I don't know - I guess I'm just used to the grind of it. I've been traveling the circuit now for five years. I don't think I'm going to get burnt out. I still love playing poker. I might skip one stop or something and take a little break, but I have some time in between a few of the stops. I think I should be fine.

One thing that would help is getting into a regular workout routine and in better shape.

www.samsungbola.com | Agen Bola dan kasino online | agen bola terpercaya | bandar bola |

Exercising and eating right is something I'm always working on but it's a constant struggle. Last year before I went to LA I'd worked out almost every day for three weeks. Once the downswing happened, I didn't work out much for a few months.

I feel so much better when I'm exercising every day or at least five days a week. I definitely think it affects my poker game. And sometimes all it really takes is going to sleep a little earlier than everyone else and waking up so I can go run or play basketball.

I guess I have two goals for the year. Hopefully success with one will lead to success with the other - and a return to my winning ways.
